Race to $1 Million – July 2012

Posted by Kevin McKee on July 03, 2012

You might remember that this was a big month for me because I paid off the last of my student loans in June. While it was a big hit to my checking and savings accounts, it's nice to finally be debt free. But was paying off $7,000 of debt and getting 3 paychecks this month (yay for 5 Fridays) enough to beat The Hoff? Unfortunately, it wasn't. Crap. Conspiracy Theory Tangent: Usually The Hoff tells me his number first and then I would look through my accounts and come up with my number, which in many cases back in 2011 was just a few hundred higher than The Hoff's. This month I did my n

Before I get into the really bad news about my net worth, I want to get into some great news about an article I wrote a little over a week ago. Brian Banks, the guy who was falsely accused of rape by Wanetta Gibson and lost 10 years of his life now has tryouts with four different NFL teams, an NFL trainer volunteering to train him for free, and even many other job offers if the NFL doesn't work out. Please read that article. The way he is handling the whole situation is simply incredible. The world needs more people like him, and I will be following his story closely and rooting for him.

Race to $1 Million – May 2012

This month is going to be a doozy of an update. Here are a few of the things that happened last month: The Hoff had a bachelor party in Vegas that we both attended (where The Hoff drank heavily while I drank water) I had a vacation in Mexico The stock market was not very kind I Won't Be Catching Up This Year So I had this crazy idea that I might catch up with The Hoff this year. I thought maybe because it is a no-donation year and because I'm starting to make a little size money that I could make up enough ground to catch him. It sounded like a good idea back in January. Now I

Race to $1 Million – March 2012

Question: What happens when the stock market goes up, you receive 12 months worth of a 401k match and you get a tax refund all in the same month? Answer: That's what you get. Two guys combining for a net worth increase of over $25,000 in 31 days. I'm pretty freaking excited about breaking the $50k mark. In fact I am now financially 35-44 years old, as the average 35-44 year old person has a net worth of $51,575. I'm 9 years early on that one! But despite the great increase in my net worth, The Hoff is still kicking my freaking butt! I'm Gonna Need Your Help! I was feeling pretty

Race to $1 Million – March 2012

I've been updating my Race to $1 Million for about 18 months now. And before I focus on this month's results (which are awesome), I want to spend a few minutes reflecting on how far I've come in the last 18 months. I first introduced the competition on September 22nd, 2010. My blog was so popular at that point I got exactly four comments on that post. One from The Hoff, one from my girlfriend TAG, and two from myself. Woohoo!!!! At that point, I said my net worth was only about $5,000. It was actually $6,569.98. Here are some other facts about my financial life back then: I had over

Hold onto your hats folks. This was a CRAZY month for the Race to $1 Million. Let's review some of the really huge things that have happened in the last 31 days. The Good Stuff for Me I was paid back on a $3k personal loan I made about $2k in revenue from my web businesses Thanks to my commitment to P90X, I have stopped eating out about two weeks ago I paid off a $3,300 student loan! The stock market was very generous this month The Bad Stuff for Me I spent $2,800 out of my health savings account for Invisalign (woot for straight teeth, will post about this soon) I had

Race to $1 Million – 2011 Results

Posted by Kevin McKee on January 09, 2012

The results are in, and after one year of racing The Hoff to $1 million dollars, I won I'm still losing by over $22,000. You might remember that my goal for 2011 was to get within $20k of The Hoff. That obviously didn't happen, but I did gain $5,499 on him. That's not a bad start. I also have a lot of things going for me this year that could have me catch up a lot more. Unfortunately, there is a huge unknown this year so I don't even have the slighted clue how to predict the race. The Hoff is getting married. From the beginning, we have decided that this is a race of household income.

Race to $1 Million – December Update

Posted by Kevin McKee on December 13, 2011

I have good news and I have bad news. The good news: I beat The Hoff this month and my net worth went up! The bad news: I'm still almost $3,000 behind my goal of pulling within $20k in 2011. Here's the slightly belated scorecard for the beginning of December, 2011: I love beating The Hoff in the monthly races. In fact, I'm pretty used to it, as I've won 8 of the 11 months of this year. Even if it's just by $150, it's big win for me. Eat it The Hoff!!!!!! But I'm still behind by $23k. I wanted to close the gap to $20k this year, and with only one month left that's probably not

Race to $1 Million – November Update

Posted by Kevin McKee on November 04, 2011

The Race to $1 Million is a monthly series where Kevin McKee and The Hoff post net worth updates. The first person to reach $1 million in household net worth wins an undetermined prize. Can I get a "WOOT!" for the stock market this month. Holey freaking baloney this month was awesome. I can't hold back any longer, so here's the update for November: That's right. Not only did my net worth increase by over six grand, but I also gained close to $900 on The Hoff. Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!! How Did I Make So Much Money?!?!?! How on Earth can I make $6k in one month? Maybe I'm dealing drugs.

Race to $1 Million – October Update

Posted by Kevin McKee on October 10, 2011

One of my student loans is gone! I've stated before that I'm not comfortable with investing in the stock market right now. There's too much global uncertainty, and it doesn't make sense while I have a bunch of debt to pay down. I took my first step towards paying that debt off when I paid off a student loan worth about $4,700 at 5% interest. It wasn't exciting. It's not going to make me rich. It's just a guaranteed 5% return on my investment and an increase of $63.64 of cash flow per month. Now my student loans are down to $15,753.68. I would like to have all of them paid off by my 27
