Prepare for the Worst

Posted by Kevin McKee on April 19, 2013

My father won't survive the weekend. My dad has been sick for over a year, but in the last few months he has gotten really bad. He has a tumor in his throat that is so big he can't even swallow a sip of water. I flew to see him on Tuesday and my sister is coming in town in just a few hours. After he sees my sister, we are taking him off everything but the pain medication. He's in so much pain it's just better for him to go. I'm almost 28 years old and this is the first time someone close to me has died. I don't really know how to handle it (I don't think anyone does), but I'm doing

Saving Money Takes Motivation

Posted by Kevin McKee on October 15, 2012

I've been writing about personal finance for over two years now. I've been running numbers, finding out the smartest ways to pay down debt. On multiple occasions I've identified places where I spend too much money (like on eating out). And in many instances I've recognized a problem and done nothing about it. Why worry about spending too much money on eating out? I was still paying all my bills, contributing 6% to my 401k, and saving a heck of a lot more money which was used to pay off student loans and then to save for a theoretical house. Then I got engaged and everything changed. N

I’m Engaged!

Posted by Kevin McKee on October 09, 2012

On Sunday October 7th I asked my girlfriend to marry me. I had been planning to ask her to marry me for a little while and the original plan was already in motion to take her to where we had our first kiss and do it there. Then the plans changed. This weekend was Tag's sister's birthday and we spent almost the whole weekend with her family. Every moment I spent with her was like torture because I wanted to ask her so badly; I didn't want to wait any longer. I almost made it through the whole weekend when she went home to study while I went to church on Sunday afternoon. As I was think

How to Save Money on a Date

Posted by Kevin McKee on May 09, 2012

Today's post goes out to all the single guys and couples out there. My single female readers are welcome to read along today, but while this post is ABOUT you, it is not FOR you. Dating is hard. There are two things that make dating difficult. First, you have to find something that's actually fun. You're not going to impress a girl with your creativity and spontaneity if your first date is dinner and a movie. And for couples out there, it's nice to spice it up every now and then and try something new. The same restaurant over and over and over and over and over again is getting old. T

I’m Back From Mexico

Posted by Kevin McKee on May 07, 2012

I'm back from Mexico! I had a good vacation. I'm relaxed and rejuvenated; I'm ready to get back to work, get back to Thousandaire, and get back to building my new website that is still a few weeks (or months) away from completion. Here are some pictures from my trip: A Week Vacation is Awesome I took a full week to go to Mexico with my girlfriend. We had some great food, hung out by the biggest pool in the entire country of Mexico, did some snorkeling, and just had a great time. I didn't have any access to work, websites, or even email. Heck, I had zero contact with America

It’s Best to Give And Receive At the Same Time

Posted by Kevin McKee on February 20, 2012

They say it is better to give than to receive. What about when you can do both at the same time? That's what I did last weekend when I was in St. Louis taking care of my mom after her surgery. While I spent most of the weekend taking care of my mom, I did have some time to go to the mall with Tag. Our primary goal at the mall was to get some lotion and other gifts for my mom, but we also made a stop where I bought Tag a gift. Here's what I got her: This might be the best $35 I've ever spent. Not only does Tag get a new shirt, but I get to look at my girlfriend wearing the sexiest shir

Valentine’s Day is All About Presentation Thumbnail

Valentine’s Day is All About Presentation

Posted by Kevin McKee on February 13, 2012

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, so if you are a man and you have a girlfriend or wife, you should probably plan something. I know there are a lot of people who hate Valentine's Day. "It's just a stupid commercial holiday to get you to spend money." I have a different take on it. It's an opportunity to do something special for the person you love. Sure, you have that opportunity every single day, but how often do we actually do something special for the person we love outside of holidays and anniversaries? I personally don't do it enough, so I appreciate Valentine's Day for reminding me

The Worst Way to Buy a Birthday Present Thumbnail

The Worst Way to Buy a Birthday Present

Posted by Kevin McKee on November 28, 2011

I need to start today's post by wishing a very special Happy Birthday to Tag. She turns 24 today, which means she's a year older than she was, but still two years younger than me. Which means I have a hot younger woman for a girlfriend, which is awesome! In the past Tag and I have done things together for birthdays. For example, I took her to the Dallas Aquarium one year for her birthday, and she took me horseback riding for mine. This year I decided to get her a physical present. And for some stupid reason, here is how I started my thought process: What would I like? Because surely if I

Should I Get a Prenup? Yes! Thumbnail

Should I Get a Prenup? Yes!

Posted by Kevin McKee on November 02, 2011

I've been talking to a lot of single/engaged people about prenuptial agreements, or prenups, and almost all of them think they don't need one. Here are the two main reasons people give: "I'll never get a divorce" "I don't have enough money to need a prenup" Are these people right? Should you get a prenup, or save the time and money? It's easy. Get a freaking prenup! Here's why. I'll Never Get a Divorce The first excuse is stupid. Just because you don't want something to happen, doesn't mean it won't. That would be like saying, "I don't need car insurance because I'll never get in
