For the last few years, there have been several missed deadlines and Supreme Court stays regarding the linking of Aadhaar numbers to bank accounts. While we still wait to see whether it is indeed necessary for every individual to link his or her Aadhaar number with their account, it was apparently made mandatory for current and ex government employees to link the two to receive their pension in Delhi.
The Pension Problem
While this decision was in itself a bit dubious, since pension is an entitlement and not a social scheme, it also caused a lot of trouble for pensioners and widows who relied on this money as their sole source of income. Luckily, this changed on the 31st of July, 2018. The news was delivered to individuals via Arvind Kejriwal’s Twitter handle. Talking about the problem at hand, the Delhi CM said that banks were not properly equipped to link the Aadhaar number to the bank accounts, which left several people without their pensions. The cabinet of the state government then decided it was time to reverse the decision, and government employees in the capital are no longer required to provide their Aadhaar details or link the number to their bank accounts to enjoy their dues.
Aadhaar in Delhi
This isn’t the first time the Delhi Government has made a decision on whether or not Aadhaar should be mandatory for receiving certain benefits. In February 2018, the Kejriwal-led Government decided that the Aadhaar card was not necessary for individuals to get rations in the capital city.
Importance of an Aadhaar Card
While individuals may still be able to enjoy certain benefits without an Aadhaar card linked to their account, the importance of having an Aadhaar card cannot be discounted. First and foremost, the UIDAI-provided card serves as a government-approved proof of identification. It contains all our important information, including our name, address, biometrics, and date of birth. The card also allows us to avail of certain government subsidies, such as the LPG subsidy.
If you haven’t started the application process for your Aadhaar yet, don’t worry, you can apply today. You will need to download the application form from the UIDAI website, and then submit the completed form, along with all the required documents, at your nearest Aadhaar centre. While submitting the papers, your fingerprints and iris scan will also be captured. You will then receive a receipt, which you need to keep with you until your Aadhaar card arrives via post.
Once the application process is complete, you can check the status of your Aadhaar card online. You can do this from the UIDAI website. Under the Aadhaar Online Services tab, you will see a menu option titled Check Aadhaar Status. Once you click on this, you will need to fill in the Enrolment ID, which is on your receipt, and the security code, which will be on the webpage itself. Once you’ve filled in all the details, you can click on the Check Status button. If your Aadhaar has already been generated, you will get an option to download your e-Aadhaar card.
Remember, you may not need an Aadhaar card to get your pension or your rations, but having an Aadhaar card will help you apply for a passport, open a bank account, and get your provident fund disbursed. So, don’t put off applying for your Aadhaar card. The process is easy and quick, and you can track the status online.
