According to EMC Security, every year there are 2.2 million burglaries in the United States. This equals one burglary every 14 to 15 seconds. Most break-ins happen when you least expect them, often while you’re sound asleep. What makes it easier for criminals? Your nightly routine. Here are six common habits burglars hope you do before bed.
1. Forget to Lock the Doors and Windows
You may think you’re in a safe neighborhood, but that’s exactly what criminals hope you believe. Many burglaries happen through unlocked doors or slightly open windows. Shockingly, 37.5% of burglars in 2023 gained access to homes without attempting forcible entry. Burglars may case neighborhoods before breaking in and look for houses with unlocked doors. Always double-check locks even on upper floors. If you leave them open, you are inviting a criminal in.
2. Leave Outdoor Lights Off
A dark yard is an open invitation. Criminals prefer to work under the cover of darkness. Motion-sensor lights or well-placed porch lighting can deter them from approaching your home at all. May sure to check batteries and bulbs on your outdoor lights often to further deter criminals. While it may cost more to keep your lights on at night, it’s well worth the cost.
3. Keep the Curtains Open
Leaving your blinds or curtains open gives outsiders a clear view of your belongings and whether you’re home. Before bed, make it a habit to close them and block the view inside. If you are traveling, close your blinds before you leave and consider leaving a light on.
4. Set a Predictable Routine
Burglars often scope out homes for days. If your bedtime and lights-out routine never changes, it’s easier for them to plan their move. Vary your schedule and consider using light timers to confuse intruders. Your goal is to outsmart the crooks. Keeping them guessing will help.
5. Leave Valuables in Plain Sight
Laptops on the couch, wallets near windows, or keys on kitchen counters can be tempting targets. Criminals look for easy grabs, so put valuables out of sight before turning in. You may also want to invest in a safe or keep your valuables outside of your home in a safe deposit box. The more hidden your valuables are, the safer they will be.
6. Disable or Ignore the Security System
The UNC Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology surveyed 422 burglars and found that half of them considered outdoor security cameras as effective deterrents. If you forget to arm your alarm system or skip checking your cameras, you’re leaving your home unprotected. Criminals count on complacency. Always activate your security system before bed, even if you’re home.
Deter Criminals From Breaking In
It is possible to deter criminals from breaking into your home. A few small changes in your nightly routine can make a big difference in protecting your home. Don’t make it easy for criminals. They’re counting on you to slip up. Hopefully, these tips will help keep you safe.
